Two New CE Courses for Nurses: Indwelling Urinary Catheter (IUC) Insertion and Maintenance and Alternatives to IUCs

Did you know that catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for more than 9.5% of all hospital-acquired infections (HAIs)?1

By Brenda Kozak, MSN, RN, CNE | December 1, 2021

Medline University is excited to release two new continuing education (CE) courses for nurses that focus on the overall goal of reducing CAUTIs.

Course 1: IUC Considerations and Catheter Types, and Maintenance Best Practices (1.5 CE for Nurses)

This course offers a comprehensive review of different types of indwelling urinary catheters, with a highly interactive step-by-step process of catheter insertion and removal. Evidence-based practices for maintenance of closed drainage systems finishes out the course.  This course is divided into five modules that will focus on deciding which patients need an indwelling urinary catheter, or IUC, understanding the different types of IUCs, the sterile insertion of an IUC, maintaining an IUC and closed drainage system, and removing an IUC. Course 2: Alternatives to Indwelling Urinary Catheters and Intermittent Catheterization (1.5 CE for Nurses)

This course discusses the importance of involving the patient and family in the catheter care process, while also exploring alternatives to indwelling catheterization, such as intermittent catheterization. This course is divided into three modules that will focus on alternatives to IUCs for incontinent patients; knowing the how, why and when of intermittent catheterization, and engaging patients and families in reducing the risk of CAUTIs. To learn more about this course, click here.
