Course Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are over 8 million healthcare workers in the United States who may come into contact with infected blood through various means. One of the most dangerous ways is through needlestick injuries after the needle has been contaminated by use. This course aims to address the issue of needlestick prevention by covering recent government regulations, safety devices and techniques, and guidance on avoiding needlestick injuries.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify viruses and infections that can be spread through needlestick injuries

  • Discuss efforts that have been made to prevent needlestick injuries and increase safety for healthcare workers

  • Recall the criteria that safer needle devices should meet

  • Examine the various types of safer needle devices and how they are used

  • Describe the measures that must be taken to prevent needlestick injuries
