Course Description
The purpose of this program is to provide healthcare workers with an understanding of the Universal Precautions to take to prevent the spread of the bloodborne infections AIDS and Hepatitis B and C, and precautions to take for tuberculosis.
Reducing the transmission of infectious diseases is a major concern for healthcare professionals. With the advent of HIV, the prevalence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and the resurgence of tuberculosis, infection prevention and control are two of your most important responsibilities as a healthcare worker. By studying this course, you will learn effective procedures which you can apply in the healthcare setting to protect yourself and patients from infection.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Review the chain of infection
- Identify prevention strategies to break the chain of infection
- Recall Universal Precautions for bloodborne pathogens
- Discuss the primary modes of transmission of HIV, HBV, and HCV inside and outside the workplace
- Describe the proper use of personal protective equipment, and the proper handling of sharps, lab materials, and waste materials
- Define the symptoms of tuberculosis and describe CDC recommendations for preventing transmission of tuberculosis
