Layers of the Skin

Course Description

When you think of wheelchair accessories, do you think of flashy colors, blinking lights, and bejeweled and bedazzled upholstery? Hopefully not. Wheelchair and wheelchair seating accessories can add much more than a “cool” look. They can be instrumental in contributing to additional postural alignment, stability, function, comfort and skin protection. This on-demand course will review some of the more common accessories that can be added to a wheelchair system, including comparisons of different styles, benefits and considerations of each. It will provide you with additional tools to put the finishing touches on an optimal wheelchair system.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Name two types of lower extremity supports that can be added to a wheelchair to promote optimal lower extremity alignment for the user
  • Identify two reasons why a mounted lateral support may be a better option than a traditional foam lateral support.
  • Describe two postural abnormalities of the head and neck that require more than a basic posterior head support on the wheelchair

Intended Audience

This course is intended for physical and occupational therapists and aides.
