Course Description

Medication errors can result in serious harm to patients, increased healthcare costs, and compromised patient confidence in the healthcare system. Even in the operating room, where patients are continuously monitored, medication errors can result in serious complications, and even death. In fact, the operating room poses unique challenges that can increase the likelihood of a medication error occurring. This course is designed to address risk factors for medication errors that are specific to the operating room, and actions that can be taken to minimize those risks.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss factors that affect the medication administration process in the perioperative environment
  • Explain potential risk factors for medication errors in the perioperative department
  • Describe interventions that can help to minimize the risk of medication errors occurring
  • Identify AORN recommendations regarding the safe administration of medications in the perioperative department

Megan Stewart, MD and Erika Probst, RN

Megan Stewart is a physician with training in General Surgery. She received her MD Degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and trained in General Surgery in Grand Rapids, MI. Erika Probst received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Portland and her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University. She has over 15 years of maternal child nursing experience with her certification in maternal newborn nursing.
