VAP Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia for CNAs
Healthcare-associated infections, or HAIs, are an unfortunate complication of hospitalizations. It is estimated that 1 out of every 25 patients develops an HAI with approximately 650,000 HAIs in the US annually at a cost of billions of dollars. 2011 data indicates that infections related to indwelling devices, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia, or VAP, account for approximately half of the HAIs. This is especially of concern since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services limited the reimbursement they provide when a patient develops an HAI. This course will discuss VAP including the definition, implications of VAP, the IHI ventilator bundle, the Joint Commission Nursing Patient Safety Goal 7, and the certified nursing assistant’s role in caring for ventilated patients and preventing VAP.
