Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2026
Time: 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM (CT)
Description: This clinical education session examines how safe urinary care depends on three linked decisions — matching the right patient with the right product at the right time. Grounded in evidence-based practice and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals, it equips clinicians to reduce catheter-associated infections, skin breakdown, and unnecessary device use while protecting patient comfort and dignity.
Learning objectives:
- Assess the patient first. Evaluate cognitive status, mobility, comorbidities, and continence to determine safe, appropriate urinary care for each individual.
- Select the right product. Use bladder scanning and clinical indication to choose the least invasive option before escalating to an indwelling catheter.
- Apply Joint Commission safety goals. Align practice with NPSG.01.01.01 for correct patient identification and NPSG.07 to reduce healthcare-associated infections.
- Act at the right time. Reassess at every change in condition to place, step down, or promptly remove devices once criteria are no longer met.
- Reduce preventable harm. Right-size care to cut CAUTIs, trauma, and skin breakdown, and avoid overuse of external and indwelling catheters.
