Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the population worldwide. An estimated 382 million people across the globe, or 9% of the world’s population, have diabetes. The number of individuals affected by diabetes continues to increase worldwide. Diabetes can be a complex and fatal disease, if not treated appropriately. It can lead to systemic complications affecting many organs systems, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Because of these staggering numbers, it is likely that nurses, in all healthcare settings, will encounter and treat a diabetic patient. This course is designed to give the nurse an in depth understanding of the illness, the knowledge of the current options in treatment, and the guidance to enhance the knowledge and understanding of their patients living with diabetes.
