In an effort to reduce surgical site infections (SSIs), health care institutions throughout the nation must implement a continuum of care that begins with perioperative planning and is consistent until the patient arrives home or at another level of care. This requires standardization and it is important that the care delivered at every level is aligned and there is consistency from provider to provider. This activity describes the risk factors and causes of SSIs, the impact on the patient, and guidelines for prevention. It will introduce the concept of High Reliability Organizations (HROs) and how they use systemness to anticipate, detect and respond in a manner that prevents catastrophic consequences. Perioperative personnel will be able to strategize how to promote systemness in their practice setting.
