Course Description
Trauma is a widespread public health concern in the U.S. resulting from different causes including but not limited to physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, acts of violence or war. Trauma affects all individuals regardless of age, socioeconomic status, gender, race, and sexual orientation. As a severe public health concern with far-reaching consequences, trauma needs to be addressed. Not doing so may result in an increased risk of mental health disorders, chronic physical diseases, and substance use disorders.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Define trauma
- Summarize the causes of and risk factors for trauma exposure
- Recall the philosophy of trauma-informed care
- Explain the symptoms and behaviors of individuals experiencing trauma exposure
- Explain the symptoms and behaviors of individuals experiencing trauma exposure
- Examine the goals when applying trauma-informed principles to patient care
