Course Description
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been a concern in the healthcare community since the early 1980s when it was first identified. HIV is not curable; therefore, healthcare workers must understand how to protect themselves and others. This course has background information on HIV, and an integrated set of actions and precautions called for by federal and state programs.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the development of HIV
- Discuss how HIV is transmitted, in the community and in healthcare
- List the signs and symptoms of HIV and its progression
- Recall the populations most affected by HIV
- Explain OSHA's Universal Precautions and the CDC's Standard Precautions
- Identify post-exposure response in a healthcare environment
