Nutritional Considerations for the Prevention and Treatment of Clostridium Difficile
This course examines an emerging healthcare problem for older adults, especially those residing in long-term care facilities; the prevalence of antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD) and C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). We review the role of microbiota in maintaining health, the absence of a healthy microflora (microbiota) leaving individuals susceptible to pathogens associated with intestinal infections. As clinicians, it is important to understand the link between antibiotics and AAD and C. difficile. We will also explore the role of probiotics and prebiotics in the prevention of these conditions.
