Course Description

An ostomy is a “surgical procedure in which an incision or stoma is surgically created in the wall of the abdomen to allow the passage of urine from the bladder or intestinal contents from the bowel.” The procedure is named for the anatomic location of the ostomy. An Ileostomy involves the small bowel, a cecostomy the cecum, and a colostomy the large intestine/colon. Ureterostomy, or cystostomy are common examples or urinary ostomies.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Be able to identify at least three features of uncomplicated stomas and peristomal skin.
  • Learn how to identify at least two common stomal and peristomal skin complications.
  • Identify four common interventions that can be utilized when complications encountered.
