Course Description

The goal of this program is to define and discuss domestic violence, and inform healthcare professionals about the importance of recognizing these cases of abuse. The course provides nurses with the educational tools necessary to screen for and identify domestic abuse, provide the victim with necessary medical treatment, document and report these cases to the appropriate authorities.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the types and signs of domestic violence
  • Identify factors that put victims at risk of being abused
  • Identify factors that put perpetrators at risk for becoming abusive
  • Recognize the various behavioral signs and physical injuries that are consistent with a victim of domestic violence
  • Perform appropriate identification and screening procedures if intimate partner domestic violence is suspected
  • Properly document any injuries, initiate interventions, and provide the victim with various sources of support
