Course Description

Take a deep look at off the shelf back supports and the critical role they play in maximizing function and in the prevention of falls, and wounds in the wheelchair system. Learn about key features of back supports such as the type of shell and the importance of adjustability to conform to the users’ unique shape. Learn how back supports go hand in hand with the cushion to achieve stability, alignment and promote even pressure distribution in an optimal seating system.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Identify three goals when utilizing a specialized back support.
  • List two back support shapes and a benefit and consideration for each one.
  • Name two spinal abnormalities that an adjustable back support through its ability to conform to the spine can assist in achieving maximum stability and promote even pressure distribution.
