This module has been created to provide nurses as well as other staff in long-term care facilities with the tools to identify the signs and symptoms of staff impairment in the workplace. In addition, requirements for mandatory reporting as well as approaches to treatment of impaired practitioners will be discussed.
After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
- Identify the components of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics that address impaired nursing
- List the risk factors associated with substance abuse
- Describe progression from sobriety to dependence or addition to drugs or alcohol
- Explain how staff, especially nurses, can get drugs for their own use in the facility where they work
- List signs and symptoms of staff impairment, including those that are cognitive, psychosocial, physical, and job-related
- State signs that a nurse may be diverting drugs in the workplace for her own use
- Summarize mandatory reporting guidelines
- Identify the steps in making a report or referral about an impaired nurse
- Summarize the non-punitive approach to dealing with impaired nurses or other staff
- Outline the components of rehabilitation for impaired staff
- Specify criteria for an impaired nurse or other staff member's return to the workplace
