Course Description

Phlebotomy is one of the most common healthcare procedures today. Laboratory testing from blood draws is fundamental in medical care by helping providers determine the best course of treatment. For phlebotomy to be effective, it must be performed with care and precision.

Learning Objective

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe OSHA standards for handling bloodborne pathogens.
  • Discuss HIPAA regulations related to phlebotomy.
  • List the correct order for drawing phlebotomy specimens.
  • Explain proper phlebotomy specimen labeling.
  • Identify the differences between straight needles, butterfly needles, and finger sticks.
  • Describe the proper method for drawing sterile venous blood from the arm and hand.
