Recognizing the Impaired Nurse in the Workplace

Course Description

This activity was developed for nurses and other healthcare workers in Florida who need to meet the mandated training to identify the signs and symptoms of nurse impairment in the workplace.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
  • Define nurse impairment
  • Describe how Florida changed from a punitive to non-punitive approach to dealing with impaired practitioners
  • Outline factors that may put nurses at risk for impairment secondary to alcohol or drug abuse
  • Explain how nurses can gain access to drugs for their own use in the workplace
  • List signs and symptoms of nurse impairment, including those that are cognitive, psychosocial, physical, and job-related
  • State signs that a nurse may be diverting drugs in the workplace for her own use
  • Identify actions surrounding drug or alcohol abuse that are grounds for denial of a nursing license and/or other disciplinary action
  • Recognize the elements of mandatory reporting of an impaired nurse in Florida
  • Identify the steps in making a report or referral about an impaired nurse
  • List the elements of treatment programs for impaired staff
  • Describe criteria for an impaired nurse's return to work
