Course Description
STIs are a worldwide problem and rates have been increasing over time. They can burden the healthcare system. STIs can have a major effect on short-term sexual health and long-term reproductive health outcomes. In this course, we will explore what a sexually transmitted disease is, explain why it is important to prevent and diagnose STIs, learn about risk factors for developing an STI, including consideration of special populations at risk, discuss challenges in STI prevention, and examine educational strategies for clinicians.

- Explain the scope of the problem of STI infections in the U.S.
- Identify risk factors for acquiring an STI
- Explain the modes of transmission in the infection process
- Recall the different types of bacterial and viral pathogens in STIs

- Summarize the five steps in STI prevention
- Discuss assessment and educational strategies for STIs
