Layers of the Skin
Course Description

During this course we will take an in depth look at the three layers of skin, their function and age-related changes that occur at each layer that make our elderly resident more susceptible to skin breakdown. We will explore common areas of skin breakdown and understand each stage of a pressure injury and its distinguishing characteristics.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Name two functions of the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis layers of the skin.
  • List two age related changes that occur at each layer of the skin
  • Name and describe one difference between each stage of a pressure injury.
Intended Audience

This course is intended for physical and occupational therapists and aides.
