Course Description

This course is designed to assist the generalist therapist to have a better understanding of the changing body of an elderly client and the increased risk of sitting in an abnormal posture. It discusses health issues related to prolonged sitting in an abnormal posture. The course identifies goals of a therapist when it comes to positioning the elderly client in a wheelchair considering these postures and the impact they play on health related issues.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
  • Name three health risks associated with PROLONGED sitting in an abnormal posture.
  • List two key questions to ask yourself during a wheelchair seating evaluation that will lead you to achieve an optimal seating system to reduce risks associated with prolonged sitting in abnormal postures.
  • Name two wheelchair positioning goals related to preventing medical complications associated with prolonged sitting in an abnormal posture.
