Course Description

This course is divided into three modules that will focus on alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters, or IUCs, for incontinent patients; knowing the how, why and when of intermittent catheterization, and engaging patients and families in reducing the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, or CAUTIs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • List alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters
  • Identify products for incontinence and acute urinary retention
  • Recognize the importance of performing intermittent catheterization to relieve urinary retention
  • Review the insertion of an intermittent catheter
  • Discuss the benefits of involving patients and family members in reducing the risk of CAUTI

Meghan Pillow received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Loyola University Chicago. She has seven years of experience in critical care and is certified as a critical care registered nurse by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Mary Pat has 45 years of critical care nurse experience and a Master’s degree in Nursing with a focus on Clinical Systems Leadership and Complexity Science.

Brenda has 17 years of clinical experience and a Master’s degree in Nursing Education and is a certified nurse educator.

Christine is a pediatric nurse and has 8 years of experience both at the bedside, in safety and quality, and in nursing education. Christine has her Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on nursing education.
